Wodehouse, Terry Pratchett, and Douglas Adams, skillfully blends escapism with sharp societal critique—a tradition Barry Blitzworth ambitiously upholds. Over a cup of Earl Grey, Barry, the creative mind behind the enchanting ‘Chronicles of the Thirteenth Tick‘ series, discusses his literary journey, deeply rooted in this rich tradition of satirical and fantastical literature that has long shaped the genre.

A self-described dreamer, Barry Blitzworth vividly recalls his youth immersed in the realms of fantasy and science fiction, drawing inspiration from seminal works that masterfully blended adventure with sharp societal commentary. “Classics like Gulliver’s Travels, Asimov’s Foundation, J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic sagas, and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy demonstrated how fantasy can profoundly comment on real-world issues,” he says, his voice filled with reverence for these literary pioneers.

Barry’s narrative approach is deeply rooted in a rich literary tradition where fantasy serves as more than escapism—it reflects societal dynamics and human truths, echoing the allegorical works of Orwell and Huxley. In his latest books, Frosted Cogs of Fall and the upcoming Winter’s Fold, Barry continues to focus on this theme. “Imagine a world where something as simple as a cat knocking over cups can change a city’s fate and reshape societal perspectives. It’s about discovering the magic hidden within the ordinary,” he explains. “To view familiar everyday things and behaviors through the eyes of a stranger—that’s what Pratchett did, that’s what Thomas More did, and what John Mandeville did in the 14th century. Fiction and humor often allow us to actually notice some deeper truths.” He adds with humility and a hopeful smile, “It’s daunting to even think of my work alongside such esteemed names, but who knows—maybe one day. I’m still dreaming, still aspiring.”

Barry’s debut novel, The Cosmic Librarian, revolves around a powerful tome that can alter reality, incorporating contemporary themes such as the AI revolution and significant societal shifts, including the pandemic. “The book taps into the AI craze, reflecting also some of the extraordinary challenges of our times,” he acknowledges.

Despite the potentially serious undertones, Barry emphasizes that his primary goal is to bring levity to life’s seriousness. “While my stories may reflect some events, themes, and even the adversities of our modern world, their main purpose is still to entertain. Entertainment is important—as humans, we need to play. As I write, I observe the world around me, hoping that these narratives might offer new perspectives or provoke thought. I certainly probe societal absurdities through humorous fantasy, but mostly, I hope they elicit a chuckle or two. Life isn’t meant to be taken too seriously,” he explains. “Preaching almost invariably leads to bad literature,” he notes wryly.

Writers like Barry Blitzworth continue to captivate and inspire, using their narratives as both a mirror and a canvas to capture contemporary complexities in an enchanting and enlightening manner. This underscores the enduring power of storytelling to illuminate both the magical and the mundane.

Barry’s connection to his craft is both deep and reflective: “We’re possibly diving here a little too deep, I think. But who knows, the line between stories and life often blurs. We look at our daily lives through lenses of normality and don’t allow them to transform into adventures. So, we read about them instead, and someone has to write those stories down. I’m happily doing that. I have more tales up my sleeve, some exploring the idiosyncrasies of both human and otherworldly beings, some linking historical figures to it all. It’s up to the readers to decide if these stories are worth reading. I hope they like them as much as I enjoy writing them.”

When asked about his hopes for his readers, Barry’s response is heartfelt: “I hope my stories inspire joy. I hope readers enjoy the stories. Reading about magical things might help us see how magical this so-called real world really is. Magic is all around us; you just need to notice it. If my stories can ignite curiosity or bring a smile, then I’ve accomplished something. That’s my ultimate goal.”

Looking ahead, Barry hints at his next project involving a rabbit, a wolf, and a witch. “It’s still early days, but I’m excited about where this story might lead. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to enjoy my tea and the thrill of new beginnings.”

As our conversation concludes, Barry’s passion for his craft is evident: “Thank you for this opportunity to share a glimpse of my world. I’m eager to continue bringing stories to those who have journeyed with me.”

Barry Blitzworth’s dedication to blending satire with fantasy continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us of the transformative power of storytelling. As he crafts his next whimsical narrative, we eagerly anticipate our next delightful escape into the enchanting chaos of Aurorium—or whatever the world might be called in his next book.

—–

You can find Barry’s author page on Amazon at the following URL: https://www.amazon.com/author/blitzworth

You can send Barry an email via his publisher to this email: barry.blitzworth@atheonfenix.com

The lineage of literary satire and fantasy, tracing back to the keen wit of Jonathan Swift and Voltaire, through the whimsical tales of Lewis Carroll, and extending into the modern era with icons like P.G.
